My Little Droney: Surveillance is Magic
by Christopher F. Smith
I recently bought the url MyLittleDroney.com for a media project of the same name. The basic idea is to create a rich storyworld centered around five US-made drones and the surveillance infrastructure that they create and serve. We’ll follow them as they fly around spying on folks, cracking jokes, and generally having all sorts of G-rated adventures.
Of course, it’s a wacky take on the My Little Pony scene (which already has a beguilingly derivative alternate universe) but one directed at discussing (criticizing?) the current state of drone usage and their impact on civil liberties, human rights, and a litany of Death From Above concerns. Ideally, the initial launch of the property would be put forward as a REAL high-quality campaign from the US Government; a campaign designed to help get our kids comfortable with the idea of drones patrolling our neighborhoods.
Moving on, My Little Droney will spawn a series of t-shirts and related merch while at the same time, stoking the emerging discussions regarding the use of unmanned drones in US airspace - not to mention the increasingly contentious use of drones in warfare.
It’s not too much of a jump to see My Little Droney spun up into a comic series and perhaps even an animated series of some sort. Homestar Runner meets drones?
We’re all familiar with the basic narrative model and characters and there is certainly no shortage of content. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Captain Planet and the Planeteers, Sex and the City and any of the other ‘teams of characters’ that we’ve all seen have prepped us for this kind of storyworld. Of course, I’ll need great characters like:Swoop, The Cool Drone - confident, crafty, and a natural leader
- Swoop, The Cool Drone - confident, crafty, and a natural leader
- Tugboat, The Brute Drone - slow but strong, handles the heavy-lifting
- Cupcake, The Chick Drone - stealthy and silent, always an invisible threat
- Lyrical, The Hip-Hop Drone - street-smart and an expert in urban landscapes
- Thrasher, The Skater Drone - brash and determined, specializes in XTreme Moves!®
Acting under the stern-but-benevolent guidance of a Government Operative of some sort (a la Splinter, Charlie, etc…) our drones will go on fun, educational missions to protect and serve (and try to avoid addressing the remote-killing issue). Good times.
